Dr. Mario Montelongo is one of the pioneers of advanced laparascopic procedures in the Matamoros area. Dr. Rene Perea Cosio

Dr. Rene Perea Cosio is a board certified general surgeon that has been in private practice for 19 years. He attended medical school at the UAT School of Medicine in Matamoros and completed his residency in general surgery and fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Centro Medico Nacional Siglo XXI in Mexico City. Dr. Perea is an expert in all aspects of laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery for cancer, polyps, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis and other colon and rectal disorders.He has significant institutional experience as an emergency room surgeon for the ISSTE and is currently chief of surgery for the Hospital Pumarejo. Additionally, Dr. Perea teaches surgical technique to medical students at the UAT School of Medicine and trains surgical residents at the Hospital General. Over the past decade, Dr. Perea has developed a special interest in performing minimally invasive bariatric procedures such as the LAP BAND and the GASTRIC SLEEVE. He teaches courses and has lectured nationally on minimally invasive surgical techniques and restrictive bariatric procedures.

Dr. Maria Elena Aguilar Zamora

Dr. Maria Elena Aguilar, a board certified surgeon and gastroenterologist, has been serving patients with gastrointestinal disorders in the Matamoros area for over 10 years. She attended medical school and completed her surgical residency at the UAT School of Medicine/ Hospital Pumarejo in Matamoros and completed her sub-specialty in Gastroenterology and GI Endoscopy at the Hospital Manuel Gea Gonzalez in Mexico City, which is recognized as one of the top GI Centers in Latin America. Most of Dr. Aguilar's practice is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as: GI reflux, gastric ulcers, lower GI bleeding, intestinal inflammation, gastritis and colitis. She also treats disorders of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and colon. Many of the endoscopic procedures available do not require surgery. Dr. Aguilar is an active member of the Asociacion Mexicana de Endoscopia Gastrointestinal.

Dr. Gerardo Ruiz Treviño

Dr. Gerardo Ruiz is a board certified general surgeon that has been practicing in the Matamoros area for 17 years. He attended medical school and completed his surgical residency at the UANL / Hospital Universitario in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Most of his training and private practice has been dedicated to the practice of gastroenterology in the surgical areas of: gallbladder, appendix, abdominal hernias, tumors, GERD, hiatal hernias, gastritis, colitis, hemorrhoids, GI bleeding. Dr. Ruiz has additional training in endocrine surgery & thyroid gland removal. He is trained in minimally invasive surgery and performs most of his procedures using the most advanced laparascopic techniques.

Dr. Ruiz is a past president of the local College of General Surgeons and is a member of the American College of Surgeons. He has taught and mentored hundreds of medical students, residents and colleagues over the last 15 years and is a Certified ATLS instructor (Advanced Trauma Life Support).

Dr. Joel Cerda

Dr. Joel Cerda is a board certified general surgeon that focuses his practice on laparascopic gastrointestinal surgery & hernia repair. He completed medical school at the UAT in Matamoros and his general surgery & laparascopic surgery residency at the Hospital Carlos Canseco in Tampico. Dr. Cerda completed a rotation in intensive care at the Hospital de PEMEX in Madero and a rotation in oncological surgery at the Hospital Central de Alta Especialidades de PEMEX in Mexico City. Dr. Cerda has been in private practice over 13 years and also sees surgical and gastroenterology patients at the IMSS, where he has been teaching surgical residents as well as interns since 1996. Dr. Cerda is a member of the Colegio de Cirujanos de Matamoros, Colegio de Salud Publica, Asociacion Mexicana de Cirugia General, Federacion Latino Americana de Cirugia. In his spare time Dr. Cerda enjoys reading literature, deer hunting and harpoon fishing.

Dr. Alejandro Mancilla is a board certified general surgeon that focuses his practice on gastrointestinal endoscopic surgery and obesity procedures such as the LAP-BAND and GASTRIC SLEEVE.  Dr. Mancilla has been in private practice since 2004 and also sees patients with gastrointestinal disorders at the IMSS. He attended medical school at the Autonoma de Baja California (UABC) and completed his residency in general surgery and advanced laparascopic surgery at the Hospital 25 in Monterrey (Unidad de Alta Especialidades) and the Hospital Regional de Zona #1 IMSS in Tijuana. He recieved additional bariatric surgery training from Dr. Lopez Corvala, an internationally acclaimed bariatric surgeon and founder of the Obesity Control Clinic, at Hospital Angeles in Tijuana. Dr. Mancilla and his staff offer bariatric patients a comprehensive program that integrate the efforts of his weight loss team: psychologist, nutritionist, internist, radiologist and bariatric surgeon.  He belongs to the Asociacion Mexicana de Cirugia Endoscopica and the Colegio Mexicano de Cirugia para la Obesidad.
